Why can't I close my left eye without closing my right eye when I look down optics?

I'm right handed, but I shoot left handed. I do this because when I shoot right handed I can't see through the scope. I can close my right eye and still keep the left eye open and I can even keep both eyes open when shooting left handed. However, when I try to do it shooting right handed, my eyes hurt and I can't see through the scope with both eyes open. Bottomline, I can see through a scope or rangefinder when I use my left eye to look through the scope, but I can't when I shoot right handed. I can't figure it out. I have a stigmatism in my left eye and I wear glasses. Any ideas?

Definitely sounds like you're cross-dominant. Right handed but left eye is dominant. If you are comfortable and accurate shooting left handed stick with it. In Hunter Education classes we teach that it is always best to shoot in accordance with your dominant eye, rather than with whether you are left or right handed. We also teach that you should always shoot with both eyes open, whether using a scope, open sights, or a shotgun bead.
