What is the difference between 'Target/Range' ammunition and 'Defense' ammunition?
Is range ammo less effective as a defensive ammuntion?
Target/range ammunition is usually cheaper ammunition designed so that you can build your shooting skills without breaking the bank. This is almost always Full Metal jacket or similar. For example, in 9mm luger, factory made target ammunition can be had for about 20 cents per round.
"Defense" ammunition is a cartridge of the same caliber, but usually with a specialized bullet designed to expand and/or break apart upon impact. These are almost always hollow point bullets. The two-fold purpose of the expansion is to have the bullet NOT go through the attacker, risking harm to others, and to cause the maximum damage to the shot person.
A target round will have little or no expansion upon hitting a person, and will tend to just pass straight through, causing the least amount of damage. A defense round will (usually) expand upon entering the target, which slows it down faster and creates a larger wound, the goal being to cause a drop in blood pressure as quickly as possible so as to incapacitate the attacker.
Some hollow point bullets add materials to the hollow pocket in the bullet to attempt to bring about other unpleasant effects in the subject.
Self defense rounds are generally much more expensive than target rounds. For example, self defense 9mm luger rounds easily run $1.00 or more per cartridge. You do want to put a couple hundred of them through your gun to make sure it doesn't have a problem with them, but once you know they work fine with your gun, it is okay to use cheaper target rounds for practice, then stay loaded with defense rounds for protection.
