How do you mount a scope on a ruger 10/22?

I already have a scope and a rifle. When I go to a store to get scope rings, what should I look for? And what should I look out for? When I got my ruger 10/22, it came with this really thin metal plate (which they called a scope mount). Is the stock scope mount any good? Or will I also have to get a new one?

With a Ruger 10/22 carbine, you probably received a "rail mount" in a small brown envelope along with some small flathead screws. This is what is known as the Scope Base.

What you need to buy next are a set of rings that will fit the base. You will want to purchase a set of "Weaver-style ringes" for that base. But, do this only after you have purchased your scope. Most scopes are 1 inch in diameter, but some .22 scopes are only 7/8" in diameter. After you get the scope, then you will know what size of Weaver-Style Rings to buy.

See-through rings are a waist of time. They orient the scope too high on the rifle to be practical.

You really don't have to spend much money on the rings. I found some at Walmart on clearance sale for about $5.00.
