Simple Mildot Question???
i just bought a centerpoint 4-16 scope from walmart with a mildot reticle. i wont be using the reticle for range estimating. im only going to be using it to compensate for bullet drop. i know that at 400 yards my rifle will drop about 18 inches. what i know now is that with 1/4 MOA adjustment turrets, at 400 yards each click will be and inch. so do i need to adjust 18 clicks to what the turret says is up or down? and also if i have an strong right to left wind and want to compensate for it slightly with the windage turret then will i adjust to what the turret says is left or right? any other tips or suggestions are welcome, thanx
You should start at 100 yards and zero your rifle - then move to 200, 300 and 400 yards and watch what your bullet is doing.
See, bullets do not fly the same out of all the barrels - the same caliber can behave totally different from one rifle to another. You use a Chronograph to measure the muzzle speed of your barrel and then you can calculate this like you are wanting to do.
Without a chronograph - you need to do it trial and error. Simply sighting in at 100 yards, adding 18 click and calling it good does not cut the mustard. Might be close - might not be close - depends on your barrel lenght and the weight of the bullet.
Windage takes time to learn. Since most people do not go to the range on windy nasty days - they never learn.
You always turn your turrent in the direction you want the bullet to move.
What you really want to do is sight the rifle in at 200 yards - and zero your turrents. Most calibers zero'ed for 200 yards will shoot 3" high at 100 yards and 3" low at 300 yards. This is more than suficient to get a quick kill when hunting - this is a good place to keep your rifle set at all times.
Next,put a piece of masking tape on the shooter side of the rifle stock. Wright down your zero for 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. Be sure to note your 100 is actually a - click and all the rest are + clicks. This might seem a bit out of the ordinary - but - a year from now when you are at the range and can't remember how many clicks to dial in......... that little piece of tape is gonna save your bacon.
