Red dot sights - are they worth it?

- Are they better suited to close range shooting than LD?
- Are they better suited to 22's than a 30-06 or a shotgun with slugs?
- Accurancy?
- Do they last? How many shots can you get out of them?
- Do they need to be calibrated often? How many shots (from experience) with what weapon?
What's your preference on dot size?

If you are not needing to have a magnification zoom on your scope, then a red dot is nice. Once you have it sighted in, and as long as you don't bump or remove the scope, they stay pretty acurate. I wouldn't recomend one on a 30-06, but they can be nice on a shotgun. I have one on my sks, and I think it does a nice job. I have put around 400 rounds through my sks with a red dot sight.
