What is the best rifle scope?
I have a Remington 700 VTR in .308 with a 4-14X44 Simmons Aetech. The scope is ok, but I want something with a BDC Reticle so I can reach out to 700-1000 Yards. Any Suggestions?
You dont need a BDC reticle to shoot out to 1000 yards. I shoot 1000 yard competition and my reticles are fine crosshairs with a Target Dot.
While mil-dots are great if you are skilled and practiced in using them, the reality is they have gone from being the primary method of soldiers estimating range to a backup system. When I had my shooting sports company, I sold many a laser range finder to precision military marksman headed to the sand box.
A good laser range finder will give a +/- 1 yard accuracy and when used with a ballistic computer or a range card will give you your sight adjustments to click into your target. The mil-dot is there as backup in case the range finder breaks or is lost.
Get something like a Leica 1200 range finder and invest your time learning to read the wind which is much more of a factor than getting your elevation right. Check out the windage adjustment at 1000 yards of a 308 Winchester with a 175 match bullet. a 10 mph crosswind will take you off point of aim by 98.55 inches so the real skill is estimating is estimating whether you have a 10 mph cross wind or 12.5 mph cross wind because that 2.5 mph difference will take you 2 feet off target and there is not a gadget invented that will tell you the wind 1000 yards away.
As far as my all time favorite rifle scope,,, the one that I would keep if I can keep only one. It is the Leupold Mark 4 16x. It is one of the original Mark 4 scopes with 140 mins of elevation and is durable enough to handle a 50 BMG recoil. Combine that with it weighing in at 22.5 ounces and a lifetime warranty from Leupold,, it is hard to beat.
